Catwalk Inspired Interiors
Even the most stylish of people can feel a tad nervous when faced with creating a new interior design scheme. However, it needn’t be such a struggle - people look to the catwalks every season to discover how to update their wardrobes, but how about it also inspiring their home? If you can pull together an outfit, you can create a new design scheme – it’s just about looking at things from a different perspective.
A few of your favourite things
Interior Designer Joanna Wood shares “I always keep a close eye on the catwalk reports, in particular I like to focus on pattern and often observe what’s happening with florals, geometrics and embroidery. I also look out for the latest catwalk colours as fashion trends and colour palettes frequently filter down into interiors.” Start by grabbing a few items from your wardrobe, or piece together a look and consider what ties them together. Is it the materials, the colour palette or the patterns? Look at the shapes too, do you opt for more geometric tailoring, is everything streamlined or perhaps it is more bohemian? All of these things are key clues towards your personal taste, you might prefer neutral colours or perhaps you would sacrifice comfort over style
When pulling together an outfit, you might choose to have one statement piece be it a bag, a jacket or necklace. This can be replicated in your home, whether it is through a piece of furniture or the design itself. If you feel the feature wall look has been overkilled, why not try statement flooring, such as a striped or patterned carpet? You can then keep the rest of the look simple, using a few key colours to tie together the look and let the flooring take centre stage.
A trend that never disappears from the catwalks is layering and this is something that can have a super luxurious look in your home. Consider using a cream rug on a coloured carpet to gain a truly stylish feel, or be inspired by the different use of textures and materials such as a shaggy rug on laminate flooring with metal accessories to create a truly unique interior.
Go Classic
Monochrome is a design staple on both the catwalks and in your home. This time-tested look enables you to mix and match with different, fresh accessories each season to tie in the latest trend colour. Alternatively, you can add in subtle greys in various textures to soften the look. Textile designer Katie Glenn from Julian Charles discusses “The combination of black and white in design certainly isn’t anything new, but with the crisp contrast of monochromatic designs whether they’re classical toiles, modern silhouette florals or bold geometrics can provide a fresh and impactful design statement to any room.”
Autumn Winter Trends
This season designers such as Saint Laurent were inspired by the Eighties and included plenty of velvet on the catwalk. Interior architect Maurizio Pellizzoni has gained inspiration from this trend and believes this look is easily achievable at home. “I can see a clear return to the 70s and 80s, this look includes the use of luxury materials and finishes such as leathers and metals. To me, fashion is very important and as a designer I get most of my inspiration from what I see around me. In interiors, I can see a change in the materials being used and they are going to become more sophisticated, for example, we are returning to using gold as a bold and clear statement.”
Red also made a statement on the catwalk with Dior and Hermes choosing it as their staple colour, whilst brocade patterns and other bold prints were seen at Erdem and Tory Burch. You can combine the two trends by opting for a red patterned carpet that will really make a statement, and keeping the rest of your furniture and accessories paired back.
Leading flooring retailer Carpetright will be partnering with London Fashion Weekend by supplying the event with luxury carpet for the Shop the Catwalk lounge, along with a selection of stylish rugs for the VIP Luxe Lounge.
