Up Close and personal: Amanda Wakeley
Amanda Wakeley opened her first design studio and boutique in the heart of London’s Chelsea in 1990. Since then, she has gone on to become the go-to designer for the world’s most stylish women, who love her ‘clean glam’ signature style.
Set to show her SS14 collection on the Vodafone London Fashion Weekend Designer Highlight Catwalk, we caught up with the designer to find out her inspirations and passions.
I’m inspired by natural beauty in any form…
from the texture on a tree, to the sea, to femininity…
When I was little, I wanted to be a princess...
isn’t that what every young girl dreams of being?
The best piece of advice
I was given has to be “See it, Believe it, Perceive it, Achieve it”
My SS14 is inspired by
a woman’s lifestyle in Africa and the way she moves fluidly from city to beach and back again. You’ll find striking zebra and Amazonian prints in fluid materials, but layered with sharp tux tailoring, which together create a wonderfully transitional wardrobe.
My most treasured possession
is not really a possession. It’s my black Labrador, Lola. She goes everywhere with me and even has a bag named after her!
My signature style in three words.
In fact it only takes two words. Clean Glam. It’s the phrase we use to describe the Amanda Wakeley visual aesthetic, not only for the clothes but anything in the brand and, of course, it translates into my own style too.
Beauty for me is all about ease.
A woman that is comfortable and confident in her own skin truly has a different aura. And the best thing is that this potential is in all of us.
I’m obsessed with
Herself Magazine (along with several others in my office), and Lula’s diary on the website is such a fun, lighthearted blog that I just can’t help immersing myself in it for a bit of escapism.
In the office we have a chalkboard
where we all write inspiring memos. My favourite right now is ‘be realistic… demand the impossible!’
