Francesca Wood - Prabal Gurung
Once my eyes had laid upon Prabal Gurung’s Pre-Autumn/Winter, I wonder if any of my other favourite designers even stood a chance at being my muse for this piece. I could tell you all about the AW15 collections of the likes of DKNY, Balmain and Phillip Lim, all of which are great - better than great in fact - but not as great as that of Prabal Gurung. Gurung's pragmatic Pre AW15 collection had me hooked instantly. From colour block knits featuring split hems which I want to sport all winter long, to more edgy black embroidery blouses I wanted it all, and I could envision myself wearing the entire collection. Something which is rare when I brood over other collections. For me, this is the reason this collection stands out so much, because it emulates the wardrobe I so badly want; a collection with no changes necessary. One which could easily slide straight into both your work and evening wear wardrobe.
When talking about where he drew inspiration from to come up with the collection, the designer said he was drawn to “something so opulent with something stark,” And the contemporary monochrome pieces, bursting with bright, bold colours are certainly well contrasted when considered against one another.
It was when Kate Bosworth adorned one of Gurung’s stunning dresses for a vanity fair Oscar party that this designer first caught my attention. And I have no doubt that he will continue to be closely watched by the entire fashion industry.
