Karen Maurice - Sibling London
Since the moment I discovered an incredible knitted swatch of leopard print jacquard in a UK factory, Sibling have held a firm place in my heart. My job as a knitwear buyer has trained me to recognise skill. Though Sibling are a trio, it’s Sid Bryan who is their knit aficionado. His technique is near flawless, pushing the boundaries of both design and technical ability with his fusion of latex and knit in their latest collection.
The element of surprise is partly what makes Sibling so great. This AW15 the fashion world obsessed over all things 70’s, but Sibling subverted it by showcasing a Debbie Harry style 80’s collection. Vogue described it as having ‘anarchist attitude;’ I just thought they had originality. Not a dirgy colour was in sight, instead bright pinks, oranges and purples contrasted with bondage style black. Every rule in the book was broken with latex, fur and fishnets sitting next to prim tweed suits and twin sets.
Their quirky collection didn’t fail to put a smile on my face, and they clearly don’t take themselves too seriously either. After fashion stylist Emma Slade Edmondson recreated one of their SS15 looks from a charity shop, Sibling congratulated her on twitter. This season, will I wear a look from their AW15 collection? No, but that’s not the point. They create a show, break all rules and inspire us to do the same. After all, who wants to wear the same as someone else?
Karen will be reporting live from London Fashion Weekend www.n4mummy.com
