Official AW14 Blogger – Phoebe Coleman

Friday saw jewellery designer Phoebe Coleman take centre stage in the events lounge with an interesting insight into her work and background. Phoebe studied Fine Art at Leeds University with an intention of becoming an artist, however after signing up for an exchange program she found herself at the University of San Diego in California suddenly submersed in the world of jewellery making. The creative world was like second nature to Phoebe - her mother was a lingerie designer so she was used to being surrounded by beautiful fabrics with delicate qualities. Yet it was at UCSD that she felt a sudden urge to begin experimenting with texture and building her own design style - simplistic jewellery that surrounds a narrative.

On her return to England she began working at Sweet Pea, a jewellery shop that had a similar aesthetic to her own. All jewellery was designed and made in house and so Phoebe worked her way up the ranks, learning the backbones of running a business and eventually assisting in the design process herself.  It was six years before she decided to go it alone, but her mission to create beautiful and effortless pieces paid off. Starting her studio in her living room, like so many small businesses are probably aware of,  was scary but unachievable. Now Phoebe has established a recognisable brand that delivers quality pieces with incredible design and function.

Her first iconic collection ‘Love me Tender’ was unbelievably successful, feminine and classic with fine gold chains and delicate diamond cut hearts. It could be said this is now her trademark however her second collection ‘Braveheart’ has a much more inspirational story.  Motivated by the astoundingly brave women in society, the ones who defied convention and stayed strong; Eileen Collins, the first woman to pilot a space shuttle mission; Maud Wagner, the first woman tattoo artist; Amelia Earheart, the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. It is a dedication to heroic and courageous women who’s lives inspired and encouraged others. Phoebe didn’t hesitate naming her mother as the most inspirational women she’s ever met, and her Braveheart collection is a nod to this amazing inspiration. It is hard to believe this talented designer used to be a puppet maintenance technician!
