Mary Katrantzou Tote
Old-fashioned telephones, typewriters, Helmut Newton, the ocean and the art of glass blowing have all played their part in inspiring the wild and wonderful prints of Mary Katrantzou. Known for her graphic artistry, the designer has won a legion of fans enamoured with her party dresses and sharp tailoring.
Now she has designed an exclusive limited edition tote bag especially for London Fashion Weekend, taking inspiration from her own AW15 collection for which she reworked baroque Victorian patterns into 3D innovative embroideries. “I loved the damask prints we created in the AW15 collection where we incorporated them into metallic jacquards and hand embroidered the formations on to garments with wefts of neon PVC. The pop of magenta and blue against the black has a real impact; a modern twist on a classic pattern,” she says.
The canvas tote – which comes full of exclusive goodies for LUXE ticket holders – is the perfect size for carrying laptops, and gym kit long after London Fashion Weekend. “My handbag essentials? My iPhone, keys, mascara and an assortment of different currencies – and Jurlique face mist if I’m travelling,” says Katrantzou, counting off the items that fill her own bag.
Katrantzou relished the task. “The British Fashion Council are a fantastic supporter of British talent and London Fashion Weekend is a great opportunity to showcase the emerging designers after fashion week. London is a real hub of creativity and diversity. I’m always amazed by the new talent coming through the ranks and it’s really exciting to be a part of that.”
